According to a recent survey of grantmakers, between 40% and 75% of the proposals that they receive do not fit their guidelines. It is now recognized that the more thoroughly you conduct your research, ask smart questions, and cultivate foundation contacts, the more your organization will stand out from the crowd.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • Prospecting for new money: how to find suitable grantmakers in expected and unexpected places
  • Computer resources and technology: where to find the best information on grantmakers on the web
  • Making sense of foundation guidelines: and how to read between the lines
  • Is there a fit: how to decide whether a foundation's priorities are compatible with your mission
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate  funding.
Speakers for this session:

Chris Bentson
Manager of Foundation & Corporate Relations
Cradles to Crayons

Chris has been involved in development for four years. In his current position, he is responsible for managing all aspects of the Cradles to Crayons grant program to both private and corporate foundations, including research, writing, submission, tracking and reporting for general operating, programmatic, and capacity building grants. He also manages efforts around corporate sponsorship and engagement, coordinates internal data projects, and serves as a key liaison for external communications. Previously, as Lead Teacher at Nazareth Child Care Center, Chris was responsible for a classroom of traditional and developmentally challenged 3-4 year olds at a Catholic Charities preschool center. Chris currently serves as Board Member for Boston AmeriCorps Alums Board. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Theology & Philosophy from Boston College.

Carol Carpenter
Development Officer, Foundation Relations
Alzheimer`s Association MA/NH Chapter

Carol has been involved in development for 11 years. In her current position, she is responsible for identifying and researching prospects, as well as writing proposals to public and private foundations to support the Alzheimer's Association's mission. Previously, as a Grant Consultant at a home-based business, Carol was also responsible researching prospects and writing proposals to foundations as well as local and state government agencies for a variety of nonprofit organizations. She also worked in Development, as a Prospect Researcher and proposal writer, at Massachusetts General Hospital. Carol currently serves as Development Officer for Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter. She earned an M.A. in English from University of Florida and a B.S. in Advertising from University of Florida.
