New ways of using PR to disseminate your message

New ways to disseminate your message: thinking outside the box

Many nonprofit organizations have a compelling mission, but don't have -- or think they don't have -- the tools available to communicate it. Contrary to popular belief, effective public relations is not about big budgets. The right tools combined with commitment and perseverance will enable your organization to advance its message for real impact.

In this session, we will cover the following topics:
- What branding means for your organization
- How to craft the key messages you need to connect with your audience
- How new media can play a role in your communications
- How to effectively pitch to the media
 - How to apply best practices for success

Participants will walk away with essential tools and skills necessary for effective public relations. If you have a PR campaign that has stalled or simply become stale, you will find this session immensely helpful.

This session is intended for Board Members, Executives, Senior Staff and PR Managers.
Speakers for this session:

Ronni Blaisdell
Director of Communications
National Ovarian Cancer Coalition

Ronni has been involved in public relations for 20 years. In her current position, she is responsible for pitching stories to the media, fielding media requests, development of press kits, creating public service announcements, website content and management, advertising campaigns, social media, acting as organization spokesperson, and all internal and external communications. Previously, as Executive Director and Founder at Team Survivor Tri-State, Ronni served as the organization's spokesperson. Before that, she worked as Sales & Marketing Director at Financial Planning Analysts where she was responsible for sales of financial services, and marketing financial service options to clients. Ronni currently serves as President of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Team Survivor. She earned a bachelor's degree in Communications from Emerson College and was awarded the 2008 "Outstanding Woman of the Year" Award from Packet Publications in Princeton NJ.

Vivian Elba
Director of Marketing & Communications
The Ethel Walker School

Vivian has been involved in media relations for 25 years. In her current position, she is responsible for Media/PR for an independent school in Connecticut, along with marketing, website management, all communications to the public and the school's constituencies, publications and more. She works regularly with editors at local and regional press outlets and has managed to procure “unprecedented" media exposure for her school. Previously, Vivian was an independent event planner, public relations and marketing consultant for a wide variety of corporate entities. As part of the event management "package" she provided, she utilized her media relations skills to procure coverage for the public events she managed, which added to the paid advertising campaign budget - at no cost. Prior to her consultancy, Vivian worked at Hilton, Marriott, and Sheraton hotel properties, where she was responsible for client development, sales management, and public and media relations. Vivian spent eight years working at WNBC and NBC News in New York, moving through the newsrooms to become an Associate Director. She earned a B.S. Magna Cum Laude in Broadcast Journalism from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Sarah Lange
Principal and Founder
Legacy Consulting, Inc.

Sarah has been involved in development for 23 years. In her current position as a consultant, she is responsible for helping clients develop robust public and community relations programs and developing innovative communication strategies to complement and bolster their fund development work, including newsletters, news briefs, brochures, annual reports, funding updates, e-news, case studies, testimonials, media and social media. Previously, as Director of Development at Oak Hill CDC, Sarah was responsible for developing complementary communications and community relations strategies much like those noted above. Sarah currently serves as Board Member for Jewish Community Center, Worcester, MA and the Boston University Alumni Council. She earned BA in Fine Arts from Colgate University and a MSW in Human Service Mangement from Boston University School of Social Work.

Sarah Tsitso
Director of Development and Commmunications
Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity

Sarah has been involved in development for 12 years. In her current position, she creates marketing campaigns and serves as staff writer for all affiliate materials. She handles all press-related issues, and serves as the affiliate spokesperson. Previously, as editor at Turley Publications, Sarah was responsible for assigning and editing all submitted materials and articles, writing, and managing all other aspects of newspaper management. Sarah's has a unique blend of nonprofit and media experience, which gives her an edge because she knows what story angles appeal to media outlets. This allows her to forge partnerships with businesses that host in-house marketing departments able to tackle larger projects pro bono. Sarah currently serves on the board for Young Professional Society of Greater Springfield, as a Corporator for the Springfield Museums, and on the PTO at Alice Beal Elementary School. She earned a B.A. in English from Simmons College and an M.S. in Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy from Bay Path College.
