Winning a grant isn't easy and often the process of writing a proposal seems intimidating. Most of the difficulty comes from not knowing what exactly goes into an effective proposal. This session will cover the following topics:
  •  The essential components of a grant proposal package
  •  Important writing techniques that make your proposal stand out from the pile
  •  Layout and design of a strong proposal
  •  Customizing a proposal to match a grant maker's interest and using your proposal as a relationship building tool
You'll go back to the office with a well honed plan for ensuring that your proposals cover the right bases every time.

Danny Jenkins
Director
We Write the Grants

Danny has been involved in development for 23 years. In his current position, he is responsible for delivering program development and grant writing services to nonprofits. As Grant Manager at Common Ground, Danny is responsible for the acquisition of 25 percent of the foundation resources. He is also responsible for the development of new grant proposals, as well as the renewal of government grants annually. Before that, he was Grant Manager at Cri-Help, Inc. where he was responsible for federal, state and local government grant acquisitions. Danny currently serves as Co-chair for The Hepatitis C Task Force for Los Angeles, an all volunteer group established in 2002 providing an annual conference for health providers and quarterly educational events for consumers and patients. He earned Certification in Counseling from Pacific Oaks College.

Jean Kling
Director of Institutional Support
Center Theatre Group

Jean has been involved in fundraising for seven years. In her current position, she increased annual income from foundation and government sources by over 10 percent since 2005 and served as lead writer on proposals generating over $7 million in income, ranging from capital grants to support for major new program initiatives. She oversees a two-person grant writing team and manages a portfolio of over 30 current donors. Previously, as Program Officer for International Medical Corps, Jean wrote new project proposals, managed large government contracts, and prepared program reports. She currently serves as Grants Consultant for Ojai Playwrights Conference and Karma Rescue. She is Founding President of Karma Rescue's Advisory Board and a Board member and Chair of the Fund Development Committee for Mediators Beyond Borders. She earned her B.A. in Spanish/Geography from Colgate University and is a member of Association of Fundraising Professionals. She has served as a grant panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and a moderator/panelist for “Funding Opportunities and Innovation” at a national conference in Washington, DC.

Jon Wagner, CFRE
Director of Development
Arts Orange County

Jon has been involved in development for 16 years. In his current position, he is responsible for setting development goals, planning fund raising strategies, managing volunteers to solicit prospects and produce events, and authoring grant applications to raise $600,000 in annual support in a one-man shop. Previously, as Executive Director at the Fullerton Historic Theater Foundation, Jon was responsible for daily operations of the Foundation and fund raising to support a $30 million capital campaign. During his tenure he increased Board giving by 15% and doubled foundation support. One grant application to the California Cultural & Historic Endowment Board secured a nearly $2 million grant – the second largest in the State. Before that, he worked as Director of Development at the Laguna Playhouse where he was responsible for $1.2 million in operations support annually. Jon currently serves as Board Member for Association of Fundraising Professionals, Orange County California Chapter. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from Whittier College and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive.
