Speakers for this session:

Robert Kusel
Vice President
Essex & Drake

Robert has been involved in development for 25 years. In his current position, he is responsible for managing organizational fund development efforts including Major gifts and capital campaigns. Previously, as Director at Blue Oak School, Robert was responsible for overseeing development and external affairs. Before that, he worked as Director at Stanford University where he was responsible for overseeing the University's Major Gift Efforts in the USA's Midwest. He earned BA in French Literature from Williams College and a MA in Education Administration from UC Berkeley. He is a member of AFP.

Janice Vela
Director of Development
Canal Alliance

Janice has been involved in development for 26 years. In her current position, she is responsible for raising $2.9 million dollars with close to $900,000 to come from individual donors. To accomplish this, Janice leads a staff of 3 full time employees, two part-timers, as well as the ED and members of the Board of Directors. Previously, as Director of Development & Alumni Relations at USF School of Law, Janice was responsible for working with the Dean to raise $14,000 in capital funds and building a volunteer board of alums for fundraising and special event purposes. Before that, she worked as Planned Giving Coordinator at Schools of the Sacred Heart where she was responsible for marketing planned giving opportunities to alumni and friends. Janice currently serves as Community Service chair for the Rotary Club of San Rafael. She earned MSW in Social Work from San Jose State University and a BA in Sociology from U.C. Berkeley.
