Finding Corporate Funders: the art of successful research
 

Corporate foundations must file 990-PFs where they record their grants. But if a corporation makes its charitable contributions directly from the company itself, a listing of its grants may not be so easy to find. This session will help you identify the most important sources of corporate funding. In particular, you will learn how to use the online resources to identify possible sources of corporate funding. In particular, this session will examine how you can use:
  • The websites of the corporations themselves to uncover details of of their corporate contributions and community relations activities
  • Online grants databases such as the Foundation Center's Corporate Giving Online and NOZA, as well as other online directories
  • Creative searches on Google to identify undiscovered sources of corporate funding 
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate funding from corporations.
Speakers for this session:

Gregg Fort
Assistant Vice President for University Advancement
DePaul University

Gregg has been involved in development for 19 years. In his current position, he oversees corporate relations and strategic planning for the Office of Advancement at DePaul’s President’s Club. During his three years at DePaul, corporate funding has doubled to almost 10 million. Previously, as Executive Director at Big Red Fund at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Gregg coordinated corporate partnerships as part of the athletic annual fund and successfully increased athletic giving by over 70 percent. Before that, he worked as Associate Athletic Director at Florida International University where he was responsible for finding corporate funders. He spearheaded the FIU Football Stadium renovation project and generated over $5.7 million dollars in revenue during his three years at FIU. His efforts also included the largest athletic naming gift and athletic endowment gift in FIU history. Gregg currently serves as Member for Alumni Board at Austin College. He earned BA in Political Science from Austin College, and is a member of CASE, NACDA.

Yvonne Orr
President
YORR Consulting Group Incorporated

Yvonne Orr has been involved in development for 17 years. In her current position, she consults clients on fund development, nonprofit management, and major gift solicitation. Previously, as Resource Development Manager at Mercy Housing Lakefront (MHL), Yvonne was responsible for managing grant submissions to corporations/foundations and soliciting corporate sponsorships. At MHL she garnered nearly $1 million in grant awards during the last quarter of 2008 towards the start-up of a new subsidiary, Mercy Portfolio Services, under the umbrella of Mercy Housing, Inc. based out of Denver, CO. MPS assists communities across the United States to address the economic and housing crises. She was also part of the City of Chicago's bid for federal funding, netting a $43 million award to address foreclosures in Chicago. Yvonne volunteers for Deeply Rooted Productions, The HistoryMakers, and Chicago Cares. She earned a BA from Hampton University and studied Nonprofit Management at Spertus Institute. She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Fund Development & Sponsorship Chair for the Collaborative Empowerment Organization and President of the Chicago Hampton Alumni Association. Eric Thompson
Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations
Purdue University Calumet

Since 2005, Eric has been leading Purdue University Calumet`s first Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations while helping the regional campus to complete its portion of Purdue University’s $1.5B campaign. In this position he has helped faculty and staff research and identify prospective corporate supporters. Eric started his career as the Director of Development for the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology. While there he successfully completed the College’s $12.5 million goal during IIT’s successful $250 million campaign. During this campaign he identified new corporate and foundation supporters through board members, online research, and market analysis. While at the University of Colorado Foundation, he led the fundraising efforts of the two largest academic units at CU-Denver during the final stages of CU`s successful $1 billion dollar campaign. He earned his MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an MFA from the Art.
